GA4 vs Mixpanel: Which to Pick in India

GA4 is free and talks to Google Ads; Mixpanel answers retention questions GA4 cannot. Which one an Indian marketing or product team should actually pay for.

Marketing teams should pick Google Analytics 4: it is free at the standard tier, it is the common language with agencies and ad platforms, and it connects natively to Google Ads and Search Console. Product-led teams whose core question is retention and per-person behaviour should pick Mixpanel, and should stay on its free tier until their event volume forces a paid plan. Most Indian teams under roughly a million events a month end up running GA4 plus Mixpanel's free tier and paying nothing for either.

Google Analytics 4

Free

Standard GA4 property. Our India measurement cost comparison lists in-platform attribution tools, GA4 included, as free.

Mixpanel

₹0

Assumes roughly 1 million events a month — the allowance was cut from about 20 million in 2024

The short answer

Pick Google Analytics 4 if you are a marketing team: it is free at the standard tier, every agency and ad platform already speaks it, and it is the only one of the two wired natively into Google Ads and Search Console. Pick Mixpanel if you are a product-led team and your real question is retention — who comes back, and where they drop off — rather than where traffic came from.

In practice most Indian teams under roughly a million events a month run both and pay nothing, because the free tiers overlap less than the marketing copy suggests.

How they differ on cost

Tier Google Analytics 4 Mixpanel
Entry Free — standard GA4 property ₹0 — assumes roughly 1 million events a month
Middle Not published. We have costed paid attribution tooling in India at roughly ₹1–5 lakh a year as a category, but that is not a GA4 price and we have published no GA4 upgrade figure. From about ₹1,750 a month (US$20), before 18% goods and services tax (GST) and a 2–3.5% card forex markup
Enterprise Not published. Analytics 360 is quoted by Google sales on a negotiated contract and we have not costed it. Not published. We have no verified rupee band for large-volume or enterprise contracts.

What drives the bill is completely different in each case. GA4’s licence cost is not the variable — the standard property stays free, so your measurement spend goes on the things you buy around it: a paid attribution tool, incrementality tests, modelling. Mixpanel has exactly one variable: events per month. Every page view, click and server-side call counts toward the meter, so a chatty product burns the allowance long before a content site notices it.

Be blunt about the gaps in both tables. Three of the six cells above say “Not published,” and that is literal. We have not costed Analytics 360, we have not costed Mixpanel above its entry plan, and you should not infer either from the numbers we have verified.

Where Google Analytics 4: Pricing, Fit and Limits (India) wins

It is free, permanently, at the tier most teams need. No event meter to watch, no festive-season spike that quietly moves you onto a paid plan, no US dollar invoice attracting GST and a forex markup.

It owns the acquisition question. Traffic sources, campaigns, landing pages and conversions sit in one place, with audience export into Google Ads and raw event export to BigQuery. Mixpanel has no equivalent of those native Google connections, which is why removing GA4 is never the right move.

It handles the compliance plumbing. Consent and data-deletion controls matter as India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, passed in 2023, moves into enforcement. GA4 also ships campaign diagnostics that flag missing aggregate identifiers when tagging breaks.

It is the shared vocabulary. Your agency, your performance marketer and your founder all already read GA4 reports. That is worth more than it sounds.

The honest cost of that: GA4’s upgrade path is a sales call with no public rupee figure from us, and it reports aggregated behaviour. It will tell you 40% abandon the cart, not which 40%.

Where Mixpanel Pricing & Review (India) wins

Person-level behaviour over time. Funnels, retention curves and cohorts are the product, not a bolt-on. If you need to know whether week-four retention improved after a release, this is the tool.

Questions you did not think of when you instrumented. Funnels and segments can be re-cut after collection, so you are not re-tagging every time the question changes.

Marketers can self-serve on it. It is generally faster to build a chart in than Amplitude, which matters when the person asking the question is also the person answering it. It also works as a standard destination from customer data platforms (CDPs) like Segment and RudderStack, so switching it on rarely needs an engineering ticket.

You can actually budget the first paid step. About ₹1,750 a month is a published figure. GA4’s equivalent step is not.

The honest cost: the free allowance was cut from roughly 20 million events a month to roughly 1 million in 2024, which caught small teams mid-quarter. Raw data export and advanced modelling are paid-only. And billing in US dollars adds 18% GST plus a 2–3.5% card markup — reclaimable as input tax credit if you are GST-registered, so a cash-flow drag rather than a loss.

Which to pick at your stage

One to five marketers, pre-Series A. GA4 plus Mixpanel’s free tier, and nothing else. Below roughly ₹1 crore of annual media spend there is little to gain from anything heavier, and both tiers cost zero.

Direct-to-consumer (D2C) store, around ₹5 lakh a month in media. GA4 is the primary tool for daily decisions. Run the event maths before assuming Mixpanel stays free: 60,000 monthly visitors at 1.3 sessions each and 12 tracked actions per session is about 936,000 events a month — inside a 1 million allowance, but barely, and a festive spike removes the headroom.

High-frequency business-to-business (B2B) SaaS. A product where each user fires 300 events a month will exhaust an event allowance fast. Price the paid plan deliberately, or compare against a user-metered tool in our GA4 vs Mixpanel vs Amplitude comparison.

Brands above roughly ₹1–2 crore in annual media across three or more channels. Neither tool answers your biggest question. GA4 stays as the operational layer; budget splits belong in marketing mix modelling, which can price television, IPL sponsorships and out-of-home. Our guide to attribution, MMM and incrementality sets out when each earns its keep.

What neither does well

Neither proves that marketing caused anything. Both describe paths through trackable clicks. Add GA4, Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads conversions together and the total will exceed the orders in your commerce backend, because each counts the same buyer on a different window. Only an experiment settles it.

Neither sees media without a click. Television, print, sponsorships, out-of-home and most influencer activity are invisible to both.

Neither messages anyone. If your gap is “we can see the drop-off but cannot reach the people who dropped off,” that is a CDP or engagement platform job — Indian vendors sit in a ₹6–40 lakh a year mid-market band, and the setup cost is separate again (see what a CDP implementation actually costs).

Neither reports AI-assisted discovery properly. GA4 can segment referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com, but AI Mode is not broken out as a clean channel and being cited without being clicked is recorded nowhere. Mixpanel does not attempt it at all. AEO audit tools cover that gap.

Both fail quietly. Tagging breaks silently in either tool, and signal loss is structural: Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies by default, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency cut app tracking sharply, and DPDP pushes the same way. India is partly insulated because Android is around 95% of Indian mobile usage — partly, not fully.

What this means for you

  • Keep GA4 regardless. There is no upside to removing it, and it costs nothing.
  • Count your monthly events before you assume Mixpanel is free. The number, not the feature list, decides your bill.
  • Agree one event naming convention across both tools on day one, or you will pay for the reconciliation later.
  • Budget the two tiers we have verified: free GA4, and about ₹1,750 a month for Mixpanel’s entry plan plus GST and forex. Get a written quote for anything above that — we have published no figure.
  • Add a self-reported “how did you hear about us?” field to your forms. It is cheap, and it beats both tools on AI-assisted discovery. Our first-party data guide covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is GA4 or Mixpanel cheaper for an Indian startup?

At early stage both are free: GA4’s standard property has no cost, and Mixpanel’s free tier covers roughly 1 million events a month. GA4 stays free as you grow; Mixpanel does not, because it meters events. Mixpanel’s first paid plan is about ₹1,750 a month (US$20) plus 18% GST and a 2–3.5% card forex markup. Above that tier neither product has a rupee figure we have verified.

Does Mixpanel replace Google Analytics 4?

No. Mixpanel is product analytics — person-level behaviour, retention and cohorts over time. GA4 is web analytics — sessions, channels, campaigns and cost, with native Google Ads and Search Console connections Mixpanel does not offer. The standard lean-team setup is GA4 for acquisition plus one product analytics tool for behaviour, sharing a single agreed event naming convention so the two sets of numbers can be compared.

What does Analytics 360 cost in India?

We have not costed it. Analytics 360 is GA4’s enterprise tier, sold through Google’s sales team on a negotiated contract, and LearnMarketing has published no rupee figure for it — we will not repeat Google’s global list price as though it were an Indian quote. It suits brands above roughly ₹1–2 crore in annual media who need enterprise contract terms and higher data limits. Get a quote against your own volumes.

If I can only run one tool, which should it be?

GA4, for almost every marketing team. It is free, it is already installed, it reports the acquisition and campaign data your ad spend depends on, and your agency can read it without training. Choose Mixpanel over GA4 only if you are a product-led team whose decisions hinge on retention and per-person funnels, and you accept that you lose native Google Ads and Search Console reporting entirely.
