Google Analytics 4: Pricing, Fit and Limits (India)

GA4 is Google's free web and app analytics tool. What it does well for Indian marketing and product teams, where it misleads, and what to pair it with.

Pricing in India

GA4's standard property is free; the enterprise tier (Analytics 360) is sold through Google's sales team on a negotiated contract, and we have not published a rupee figure for it.

Starter

Free

Standard GA4 property. Our India measurement cost comparison lists in-platform attribution tools, GA4 included, as free.

  • Event tracking for web and app
  • Campaign and traffic-source reports
  • Conversion tracking with custom attribution windows
  • Audience export to Google Ads
  • BigQuery raw event export
  • Support SLA
  • Offline, TV and sponsorship measurement
  • Per-person targeting or messaging
  • AI Mode citation reporting

Growth

Not published

GA4 standard plus paid measurement tooling around it. We have costed paid attribution tools in India at roughly ₹1–5 lakh a year as a category, but that band is not a GA4 price and we have published no GA4 upgrade figure.

  • Everything in Starter
  • A paid attribution tool alongside GA4
  • Self-reported attribution field on forms
  • Quarterly incrementality tests to calibrate GA4 numbers
  • Any GA4 price we have verified
  • Guaranteed unsampled data
  • Marketing mix modelling
  • Identity resolution across channels

Enterprise

Not published

Analytics 360, quoted by Google sales on a negotiated contract. We have not costed this tier and will not repeat Google's global list price.

  • Everything in Starter
  • Enterprise service and contract terms
  • Higher data limits
  • Suited to brands above roughly ₹1–2 crore in annual media
  • A published rupee figure from us
  • Causal proof of channel contribution
  • Offline and brand media coverage
  • Campaign execution

Bands are our estimates for Indian buyers, not vendor list prices. Confirm with the vendor before budgeting.

What Google Analytics 4 is

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google’s analytics product for websites and apps. It records visitor actions as events and reports on traffic sources, campaigns, audiences and conversions — which makes it, in measurement terms, an attribution tool: it assigns credit for a conversion to the clicks and sessions it can see before that conversion.

The standard property is free to use, which is why almost every Indian marketing team already has one. The enterprise tier, Analytics 360, is quoted by Google’s sales team; we have not costed it, so it appears above as “Not published” rather than a figure borrowed from Google’s global price page.

Key features

  • Event-based tracking for web and app inside one property
  • Traffic-source, campaign and landing-page reporting built on UTM tags
  • Conversion tracking, including custom conversion attribution windows added in 2026, reported by Search Engine Land
  • Campaign diagnostics that flag missing aggregate identifiers when tagging breaks
  • Audience building, with export into Google Ads
  • Referral segmentation — you can isolate sessions arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com
  • Raw event export to BigQuery
  • Consent and data-deletion controls, which matter under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act

Who it fits

One to five marketers, pre-Series A. GA4 plus Google Search Console is a reasonable entire stack. Indian teams commonly run exactly this pairing, and below roughly ₹1 crore of annual media spend there is little to gain from anything heavier.

D2C and mid-market teams spending around ₹5 lakh a month upward. GA4 is the right tool for daily decisions — which creative to pause, which landing page to fix. Pair it with a monthly reconciliation against your order system and a quarterly lift test; our guide to attribution, MMM and incrementality sets out when each one earns its keep.

Brands above ₹1–2 crore in annual media across three or more channels. GA4 stays as the operational layer, but budget splits should move to marketing mix modelling, which can price television, IPL sponsorships and out-of-home that GA4 structurally cannot see.

Product and lifecycle teams that need to act on individuals. GA4 reports aggregated behaviour. It will tell you 40% abandon the cart; it will not tell you which 40% and message them. That is a customer data platform job.

Where it is weak

It over-credits, and so does everything next to it. Add GA4, Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads conversions together and the total will exceed the orders in your commerce backend, because each platform counts the same buyer on a different window. Branded search is the most over-credited line item in most Indian D2C accounts, and GA4 will not flag it.

It cannot measure media without a click. Television, print, sponsorships, out-of-home and most influencer activity are invisible to it. Attribution proves nothing about causation — only an experiment does.

It under-reports AI-assisted discovery. You can segment LLM referrals, but the volume is small and the intent is late-stage, so a sessions-based read makes the channel look trivial. A self-reported “how did you hear about us?” field on your form is now often more accurate. Google’s reporting for AI surfaces is also thin: AI Mode is not broken out as a clean channel, so when Google confirmed a citation bug in AI Mode — reported by Search Engine Land — publishers had no way to see the lost attribution inside GA4.

It fails quietly. Privacy-safe measurement breaks silently when tagging is wrong; the campaign diagnostics feature exists precisely because of that. And custom attribution windows are easy to change mid-quarter, which makes your numbers “improve” for reasons that have nothing to do with marketing.

Signal loss is structural. Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies by default and Apple’s App Tracking Transparency cut mobile app tracking sharply. India is partly insulated because Android is around 95% of Indian mobile usage, but the DPDP Act, passed in 2023 and moving into enforcement, pushes the same way: less consented user-level data over time.

Alternatives

  • An engagement CDP — MoEngage, CleverTap or WebEngage. Not a replacement for analytics, but the right buy when the problem is acting on data rather than reporting it. Mid-market bands and how these vendors meter are in our CDP pricing comparison for India.
  • Google Meridian or Meta Robyn. Open-source marketing mix modelling for the budget question GA4 cannot answer. See Meridian, Robyn and PyMC-Marketing compared.
  • An AEO or AI-visibility tracker. These watch whether AI assistants cite you, which GA4 does not report at all. Our guide to AEO audit tools covers what they track; expect a few thousand rupees a month upward.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Analytics 4 free in India?

Yes. The standard GA4 property is free to use, and in our India measurement cost comparison we list in-platform attribution tools like GA4, Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads reporting as free, against roughly ₹1–5 lakh a year for a paid attribution tool. Google’s enterprise tier, Analytics 360, is sold on a negotiated contract and we have not published a rupee figure for it.

Does GA4 show traffic from ChatGPT and AI Mode?

Partly. You can segment referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com, which gives you a small but high-intent view. What GA4 does not give you is Google’s AI Mode as its own channel, or any record of being cited without being clicked. Judge that traffic on revenue per session rather than session count, and add a self-reported source field to your forms.

Do I need a CDP if I already use GA4?

Probably yes, if you want to act on the data rather than report on it. Analytics tools are built to summarise aggregated behaviour; a customer data platform resolves events into one profile per person and pushes that profile into WhatsApp, push, email or ad platforms for targeting. GA4 tells you 40% abandon the cart. A CDP tells you which 40%, and messages them.

Can GA4 tell me which channel actually drove sales?

No. GA4 describes the path a buyer took through trackable clicks; it does not show what would have happened without the ad. Platform-reported conversions across GA4, Meta and Google routinely exceed the orders your commerce system records. Use GA4 for weekly campaign decisions, a matched-city incrementality test to prove a channel causes sales, and marketing mix modelling for annual budget splits.
