RudderStack vs Snowplow: Which to Pick in India
RudderStack wins on cost and speed for almost every Indian marketing team. Snowplow earns its keep only when you already employ a data engineer.
Pick RudderStack unless you already employ a data engineer: it is free to around 1 million events a month, sits at ₹0–₹45,000 a month at 5 million events, and gets a marketer to a first event in hours. Pick Snowplow if schema-validated behavioural data in your own cloud account is the actual requirement, or if a regulator or an enterprise buyer demands that data stay in an Indian region and you have someone on the payroll to own the pipeline. At seed stage there is no financial case for Snowplow at all.
₹0
Free tier, around 1M events/month (~8,000 users at seed D2C scale)
₹10,000–₹15,000/mo
Assumes ~300K events and ~8,000 users a month (seed D2C scale), cloud infrastructure only, plus setup time. Converted at ~₹88/USD.
The short answer
Pick RudderStack. For almost every Indian marketing or product team it is cheaper at the volumes you actually run, and it gets you a first event in hours rather than weeks. Snowplow is the right answer only in two situations: you already employ a data engineer who will own schemas and monitoring, or data residency in an Indian cloud region is a contractual or regulatory requirement you cannot negotiate away.
How they differ on cost
These are two different billing shapes, not two prices for the same thing. RudderStack bills you for events per month on a managed cloud. Snowplow Community Edition charges no licence fee at all and instead sends you a cloud bill plus a salary line.
| Scale | RudderStack | Snowplow (Community Edition, self-hosted) |
|---|---|---|
| ~300,000 events / ~8,000 users a month (seed D2C) | ₹0 — free tier covers roughly 1 million events a month | ₹10,000–₹15,000 a month, cloud infrastructure only, plus setup time |
| ~5 million events / ~60,000 users a month (Series A) | ₹0–₹45,000 a month, managed | ₹65,000–₹1.1 lakh a month all-in (cloud bill ₹35,000–₹50,000, the rest engineer time at 15–25% of one FTE) |
| ~50 million events / ~4 lakh users a month | ₹1.5–₹4 lakh a month, quote only, negotiated | Cloud bill alone ₹1.5–₹3 lakh a month, plus the same engineer load |
| One-time build | None on managed cloud; ₹2–₹5 lakh if you self-host the open core (2–4 weeks of a data engineer) | ₹2–₹5 lakh (4–8 weeks of a data engineer to reach production) |
| Vendor-managed top tier | ₹1.5–₹4 lakh a month, no published list price | Not published — an annual contract quoted per deal, and we have not costed it |
Read that last row carefully. Snowplow’s managed offering has no rupee band from us because we have not priced it, and the absence is a gap in our research, not evidence that it is cheap. Get that figure in writing from Snowplow’s pricing page before you put it in a budget.
What actually drives the bill is different on each side. On RudderStack it is raw event volume, so a chatty product where every user fires hundreds of events pushes you up the bands fast. On Snowplow it is engineering time — the licence is the cheapest part of Snowplow. Both numbers sit on top of your warehouse compute, which neither vendor includes, and anything billed in dollars attracts 18% GST (goods and services tax) plus a 2–3.5% forex markup. Our figures convert at about ₹88 to the dollar and are planning ranges, not quotes.
Where RudderStack wins
The free tier is unbeatable at seed stage. A D2C (direct-to-consumer) brand at 300,000 events and 8,000 monthly users pays ₹0. The same shape of team on Snowplow pays ₹10,000–₹15,000 a month in cloud costs and still has to build the thing.
Time to value. Hours to a first event versus days to weeks, and four to eight weeks for a production-grade Snowplow pipeline with schemas, monitoring and alerting. At Indian fully-loaded rates of ₹2–₹2.5 lakh a month for a mid-level data engineer, that delay is real money before a single campaign ships.
Migration is close to free. RudderStack’s SDKs (software development kits — the libraries you drop into your app) mirror Twilio Segment’s, so most teams move by changing a write key. Nothing about Snowplow is a drop-in anything.
Marketing destinations. RudderStack ships a destination catalogue a growth team can switch on. Snowplow deliberately does not — there is no no-code destination menu, so every activation is an engineering ticket.
Where Snowplow wins
Data quality by construction. You define what a product_viewed event must contain, and malformed events get quarantined instead of silently polluting your tables. RudderStack will happily route whatever you send it. If your last analytics project died of inconsistent event payloads, this is the difference that matters.
Residency without a workaround. Community Edition runs entirely in your own AWS or Google Cloud account, including AWS Mumbai. RudderStack’s managed cloud is primarily US and EU, so Indian residency there generally means self-hosting the open core — and then you are running a pipeline anyway, which was Snowplow’s cost model all along.
No vendor volume cliff. At the top end, Snowplow’s cloud bill at 50 million events is ₹1.5–₹3 lakh a month against RudderStack’s negotiated ₹1.5–₹4 lakh. Our pipeline maths puts the genuine crossover at roughly 50–100 million events a month, the point where a managed bill passes ₹4–5 lakh and a quarter of an engineer starts looking like excellent value.
Enrichment and control. You own the collector, the stream, the enrichment step and the loader. That is a burden below the crossover and an advantage above it.
Which to pick at your stage
Pre-seed and seed, under 1 million events a month. RudderStack, at ₹0. There is no financial argument for building a pipeline at this stage, and no amount of schema rigour is worth ₹10,000–₹15,000 a month plus a build you cannot staff.
Series A, around 5 million events, marketer plus a part-time engineer. RudderStack at ₹0–₹45,000 a month beats Snowplow’s ₹65,000–₹1.1 lakh all-in. Our own costings say the self-hosted saving at this volume frequently is not a saving at all.
Series A or B, product-led, data engineer already on payroll. Now it is a real choice. If that engineer’s time is already committed to the warehouse and you want validated behavioural data in it, Snowplow earns its 15–25% of an FTE (full-time equivalent), about ₹30,000–₹60,000 a month.
Fintech, health, or selling to Indian banks and enterprises. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 does not impose blanket localisation, but sector regulators do — the Reserve Bank of India on payment data in particular. If procurement asks where the data physically sits, Snowplow answers cleanly; so does self-hosted RudderStack, at ₹15,000–₹25,000 a month of AWS Mumbai infrastructure plus 2–4 weeks of build.
Above 50 million events a month. Price both properly. RudderStack is ₹1.5–₹4 lakh a month negotiated; Snowplow managed we have not costed, and Community Edition is ₹1.5–₹3 lakh in cloud alone.
What neither does well
Neither is a packaged customer data platform, and this is where most Indian teams get burned. Neither hands a marketer a point-and-click audience builder the way CleverTap or MoEngage do, and identity resolution is not something either gives you for free. If your growth lead expects to build a segment and push it to WhatsApp on Friday afternoon, a pipeline — either pipeline — will disappoint them.
Neither publishes a complete price either. RudderStack’s enterprise tier is quote-only, we have published no figure for its reverse ETL product specifically, and Snowplow’s managed tier reads “Not published” because we have not costed it. Neither includes your warehouse compute, which your cloud provider bills separately. And both rest on open-source cores whose licences have shifted in recent years — read the current terms on rudder-server and the Snowplow repository before you build a business on either.
The deepest shared gap is conventions. Most pipeline projects fail on event naming and ownership, not on vendor choice. Neither tool supplies a named person to own schemas and alerting.
What this means for you
- Do the ratio first. Divide last month’s real events by monthly active users. Below roughly 20, event pricing favours you; above roughly 100, per-user pricing does. Take the number into every sales call.
- Default to RudderStack unless a data engineer is already on the payroll or residency is contractual.
- Price the engineer, not the instance. Snowplow’s ₹65,000–₹1.1 lakh at 5 million events is mostly salary.
- Budget the India surcharges on anything managed: 18% GST under the reverse charge mechanism, recoverable as input tax credit if you are registered, plus 2–3.5% forex markup.
- Cost the whole project, not the licence — see how much a CDP implementation actually costs. If your team is small, first-party data strategy for small marketing teams is the cheaper starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Is RudderStack or Snowplow cheaper for an Indian team?
RudderStack, at the volumes most Indian teams run. At roughly 300,000 events a month RudderStack is ₹0 on its free tier while Snowplow Community Edition costs ₹10,000–₹15,000 a month in cloud infrastructure. At around 5 million events RudderStack’s band is ₹0–₹45,000 a month against Snowplow’s ₹65,000–₹1.1 lakh all-in once engineer time is counted. These are planning ranges converted at about ₹88 to the dollar, not quotes.
What does Snowplow’s managed plan cost?
We do not know, and we will not guess. Snowplow’s managed offering is sold as an annual enterprise contract quoted per deal, with no published list price, and LearnMarketing has not costed that tier. Treat the absence as a gap in the available information rather than a signal that it is cheap. Request a written quote directly from Snowplow and compare it against RudderStack’s negotiated ₹1.5–₹4 lakh a month at around 50 million events.
When is Snowplow worth the extra work over RudderStack?
Three situations. First, you already employ a data engineer who will own schemas, upgrades, monitoring and alerting — without that person, neither tool’s advantages survive. Second, data must stay in an Indian cloud region such as AWS Mumbai for a regulator or an enterprise buyer. Third, volume: our maths puts the crossover at roughly 50–100 million events a month, where managed bills pass ₹4–5 lakh. Below that, a hosted pipeline is usually cheaper and faster.
Can either keep customer data inside India?
Yes, but only by self-hosting. Snowplow Community Edition runs entirely in your own cloud account, so collection, enrichment and storage can all sit in AWS Mumbai. RudderStack’s managed cloud is primarily US and EU, so Indian residency means running its open core yourself — roughly ₹15,000–₹25,000 a month of infrastructure at 5 million events, plus 2–4 weeks of a data engineer to build it and 15–25% of an FTE thereafter.
