Best Customer Data Platforms in India: Pricing Compared
What CleverTap, MoEngage, WebEngage, Segment, RudderStack, mParticle and Zeotap really cost an Indian brand in 2026 — with the arithmetic shown.

For most Indian marketing teams the shortlist comes down to three India-built engagement platforms — CleverTap, MoEngage and WebEngage — because they bill in rupees, treat WhatsApp as a first-class channel, and start at a price a mid-market brand can actually sign. Segment, RudderStack and mParticle are the better fit when your bottleneck is engineering data plumbing rather than running campaigns, and Zeotap remains the specialist pick when identity and consent are the real problem. As a planning number: budget roughly ₹8–30 lakh a year for a mid-market engagement CDP and ₹40 lakh upward for an enterprise data CDP — then add a channel bill that, on most Indian deals, is bigger than the licence.
What a CDP actually does
A CDP (customer data platform) is software that collects customer data from every place you touch a person — website, app, point of sale, support desk, ad platforms — stitches those events into one profile per human being, and makes that profile available to other tools in near real time.
The stitching is the hard part and the reason the category exists. One shopper might appear in your systems as a newsletter email, a device ID in the app, a phone number at checkout and a cookie on the website. Without identity resolution you treat four records as four people, and your retargeting budget pays for the confusion.
It is not a CRM (customer relationship management system). A CRM is built around known, sales-facing records that humans edit. A CDP is built around machine-generated behavioural events at far higher volume. It is also not a DMP (data management platform), which traded in anonymous third-party audiences for ad buying — a category that the decline of third-party cookies has largely hollowed out.
The two kinds of CDP you will be pitched
Almost every confusing sales conversation in this category comes from mixing up two different products that share a name.
Data CDPs focus on collection, identity resolution, governance and forwarding data onward. They assume you already own campaign tools. Segment, RudderStack and mParticle sit here. You buy them to stop writing the same tracking integration eleven times.
Engagement CDPs bundle the data layer with the thing that sends the message — push, WhatsApp, email, SMS, in-app nudges, journey builders. CleverTap, MoEngage and WebEngage sit here. You buy them so a lifecycle marketer can build a win-back journey without filing an engineering ticket. If those three are already your shortlist, our head-to-head on CleverTap, MoEngage and WebEngage goes deeper on feature differences.
Zeotap straddles both camps, with unusually deep identity and consent capability for the Indian market.
Getting this distinction right saves money. Buying a data CDP and then discovering you still need a campaign tool is how a ₹20 lakh budget quietly becomes ₹45 lakh.
The seven platforms, side by side
| Platform | Type | Origin | How it meters | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twilio Segment | Data CDP | US | Monthly tracked users (MTUs) or API calls | Product-led and SaaS teams that want clean data piped everywhere |
| RudderStack | Data CDP, warehouse-native | US, with a large India engineering base | Events per month; free tier for low volume | Teams that already run a warehouse and want to own the data layer |
| mParticle | Data CDP | US; now part of Rokt following the 2024–25 acquisition | Custom, volume-based | Large enterprises with heavy mobile apps and strict governance needs |
| Zeotap | Data CDP with activation | Berlin-founded, large India operation | Custom, profile and use-case based | Brands whose core problem is identity, consent and offline-to-online matching |
| CleverTap | Engagement CDP | India / US | Monthly active users (MAUs), plus channel usage | High-frequency apps — fintech, gaming, quick commerce |
| MoEngage | Engagement CDP | India (Bengaluru) | MAUs, plus channel usage | Retail, D2C and BFSI teams wanting strong AI-assisted journeys |
| WebEngage | Engagement CDP | India (Mumbai) | MAUs, plus channel usage | Mid-market Indian brands that want the lowest entry cost |
If your shortlist is the data-CDP side of that table, the rupee maths in our Segment vs RudderStack vs Snowplow comparison is the natural next read.
How CDP pricing actually works
Only a couple of these vendors publish real numbers. Segment lists a free tier capped at around 1,000 monthly tracked users and a paid team plan starting near US$120 a month — roughly ₹10,000–11,000 at recent exchange rates — with anything serious moving to a custom business plan. RudderStack also publishes a free tier and event-based paid plans. Everyone else runs a "talk to sales" model, so published figures change without notice and you should open the pricing pages linked above before you build a business case.
Three meters matter, and you should ask which one applies before you look at any number.
| Meter | You pay for | It punishes | Ask the vendor |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAU / MTU | Each unique user seen in a billing month | Large, lightly engaged bases; seasonal spikes | Is an anonymous web visitor counted? What happens in a festive-sale month? |
| Events / API calls | Each action tracked | Chatty apps that log every scroll and screen view | Are system and internal events billable? Can we filter at the edge? |
| Profiles stored | The database, active or dormant | Brands that never prune stale records | Can we archive dormant profiles without losing history? |
Then there is the line nobody puts in the deck: channel costs are separate. WhatsApp marketing templates in India are billed by Meta per message, in the region of ₹0.70–0.90 each depending on category and current rate card. Treat that as an estimate and check Meta’s published rates — the model has been revised more than once, including the shift from conversation-based to per-message billing. SMS, email volume and any CPaaS partner markup are usually metered on top.
Indicative budget bands for Indian buyers
The table below is a planning aid, not a quote. It is built from published pricing models, tier structures and the shape of typical mid-market deals — not from leaked contracts. Treat every figure as an estimate and expect a negotiated deal to land somewhere inside a wide range.
| Platform | Realistic entry point (annual, estimate) | Mid-market to enterprise band (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Segment | Free tier, then ~₹1.2–1.5 lakh | ₹15–60 lakh once on a business plan |
| RudderStack | Free tier, then ~₹1–3 lakh | ₹10–50 lakh at enterprise event volumes |
| mParticle | Enterprise only | ₹60 lakh–₹2 crore+ |
| Zeotap | Enterprise, use-case scoped | ₹30 lakh–₹1 crore |
| CleverTap | Startup programmes available | ₹10–40 lakh |
| MoEngage | Startup programmes available | ₹8–35 lakh |
| WebEngage | Lowest of the seven | ₹6–25 lakh |
Two structural facts push Indian pricing below US list rates. First, the India-built vendors compete hardest at home and will discount to keep a marquee local logo. Second, a dollar-denominated contract carries currency risk that a rupee contract does not — worth raising explicitly, because most global vendors can bill in INR if you insist.
Worked example: a 2 million MAU D2C brand
Say you run a direct-to-consumer brand with 2 million monthly active users across app and web, and you send WhatsApp campaigns to a segmented slice of that base — call it 1.5 million marketing messages a month.
- Engagement CDP licence: ₹20 lakh a year (mid-band estimate)
- WhatsApp: 1,500,000 × ₹0.80 = ₹12 lakh a month = ₹1.44 crore a year
- Implementation and first-year engineering: ₹8 lakh (estimate)
- Year-one total: roughly ₹1.72 crore
The licence is about 12% of that. The channel bill is seven times the software bill. That reframes the entire evaluation: a platform whose segmentation lets you cut send volume by 20% without losing revenue saves 0.2 × ₹1.44 crore = ₹28.8 lakh a year — more than the licence costs. Negotiate hard on the licence, but choose on segmentation and deliverability quality. If WhatsApp is doing this much of your lifting, the tactics in our WhatsApp marketing playbook for India will move the number faster than any discount.
Worked example: when the meter is the whole problem
Now take a content app with 5 lakh MAU but a noisy tracking plan — roughly 400 tracked events per user per month, or 200 million events monthly. An MAU-metered vendor barely notices. An event-metered vendor charges for every scroll.
Suppose the quote works out to ₹250 per million events. That is a hypothetical unit rate for illustration, not a published price.
- 200 million events × ₹250 per million = ₹50,000 a month = ₹6 lakh a year
- Prune the plan to 60 genuinely useful events per user — 30 million a month — and the same rate gives ₹7,500 a month = ₹90,000 a year
- Saving: about ₹5.1 lakh a year, from a two-week tracking-plan cleanup
The lesson is not "avoid event pricing". It is that the meter should match your usage shape. Event pricing suits low-volume, high-value B2B products. MAU pricing suits high-frequency consumer apps where each user generates hundreds of actions.
The costs that never appear on the quote
| Cost line | Typical range (estimate) | Who pays it |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation and SDK work | ₹3–25 lakh, one-off | You, or a partner agency |
| Tracking-plan design and QA | 4–10 engineering weeks | Your product team |
| Channel spend (WhatsApp, SMS, email) | Often 3–10× the licence | Meta, your CPaaS, your ESP |
| Warehouse compute and storage | ₹1–10 lakh a year | Your cloud bill |
| Overage on a bad forecast | Uncapped unless negotiated | You, in month 11 |
We break the first two lines down properly in how much a CDP implementation actually costs. The short version: the licence is the part of the budget you argue about, and the implementation is the part that slips.
Negotiation levers that work in India
- Ask for rupee billing. It removes currency risk from your side of the table and most vendors can do it.
- Cap the renewal, not just the first year. A 15% discount followed by a 40% renewal jump is not a discount.
- Negotiate overage rates upfront. Agree what a 30% volume spike costs before you sign, not during a festive sale.
- Buy channel volume separately where you can. Some vendors resell WhatsApp and SMS at a markup; going direct to a business solution provider is often cheaper.
- Time it to quarter-end. Indian and US vendors both close harder in March, June, September and December.
- Put the success metric in the contract. A named use case and a measurable target give you leverage at renewal.
Six mistakes Indian buyers make
- Buying on MAU price alone. A cheaper per-MAU rate with weak identity resolution means you pay for the same person twice and message them twice.
- Ignoring implementation effort. A rollout needs a tracking plan, SDK work and QA. Budget engineering weeks, not just licence fees.
- Skipping the DPDP question. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, passed in 2023, with implementing rules notified in late 2025 and phasing in over roughly the following 18 months, brings consent, purpose-limitation and deletion obligations. Ask how the platform records consent per purpose, how fast it honours a deletion request, and where data is stored. Confirm the current compliance deadlines with your legal team — the phase-in dates matter.
- Signing three years to save 15%. This category is consolidating — the Rokt–mParticle deal is the obvious reminder. One-year terms with a renewal cap age better.
- Buying a CDP to fix a data-quality problem. If your events are inconsistently named, a CDP will resolve identities across garbage faster. Fix the tracking plan first.
- Forgetting the warehouse you already own. If your data is already clean in BigQuery or Snowflake and you only need to push it into tools, reverse ETL may cost a fraction of a full CDP.
A 60-day evaluation that actually decides something
- Week 1–2: write the tracking plan for one use case — usually cart abandonment or win-back — and agree the success metric with finance, not just marketing.
- Week 3–6: run a paid pilot with two vendors on that single use case. Paid pilots get real support; free trials get a sandbox.
- Week 7–8: compare incremental revenue against total cost — licence plus channel plus the engineering hours the pilot consumed.
- Before signing: ask for the deletion-request demo and the overage rate in writing.
What this means for you
- Under 5 lakh MAU and campaign-led? Shortlist WebEngage and MoEngage, and ask both for a rupee-denominated one-year contract with a capped renewal.
- High-frequency app — fintech, gaming, quick commerce? Add CleverTap and score vendors specifically on real-time triggers and push delivery rates.
- Engineering-heavy stack with campaign tools already in place? Segment, RudderStack or mParticle — and pick your meter to match your usage shape before you compare prices.
- Identity, consent and offline-to-online matching are the actual problem? Put Zeotap in the room.
- Model total cost as licence plus implementation plus a year of channel spend before comparing quotes. On most Indian deals the messaging bill dominates.
- Prune your tracking plan before you sign anything metered on events. It is the cheapest saving available to you.
- Run a 60-day paid pilot on one real use case with an agreed success metric before you commit annually.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best CDP in India?
There is no single winner. For mid-market Indian brands running lifecycle campaigns, MoEngage, CleverTap and WebEngage are the usual finalists, because they combine the data layer with WhatsApp, push, SMS and email in one rupee-billed contract. For engineering-led teams that need clean data routed into many tools, Segment, RudderStack and mParticle are stronger. Zeotap is the specialist pick when identity resolution and consent management are the core problem. Choose by which bottleneck you actually have — sending campaigns, or moving data — not by feature-count.
How much does a customer data platform cost in India in 2026?
Expect roughly ₹6–40 lakh a year for a mid-market engagement CDP, and ₹40 lakh to over ₹1 crore for an enterprise data CDP. Segment and RudderStack publish free tiers and entry plans — Segment’s paid team plan starts near US$120 a month, about ₹10,000–11,000 — while the rest quote privately. Add implementation, typically ₹3–25 lakh one-off, and channel costs such as WhatsApp messages, which are billed separately by Meta. All figures here are planning estimates; every enterprise deal is negotiated on volume and term.
What is the difference between a CDP and a CRM?
A CRM (customer relationship management system) stores known contacts and the sales conversations around them, usually updated by people. A CDP (customer data platform) ingests high-volume behavioural events from apps, websites and offline systems, resolves them into one profile per person, and feeds those profiles to other tools automatically. The CRM answers "who is this account and what did we promise them?" The CDP answers "what did this person just do, and what should we send them now?" Most companies end up running both.
Do I need a CDP if I already have GA4 and a data warehouse?
Not always. Analytics tools such as GA4 report on aggregated behaviour; they are not built to identify individuals and activate them in channels. But if your customer data is already clean and unified in a warehouse like BigQuery or Snowflake, reverse ETL — syncing warehouse tables out to your marketing tools — can deliver much of the value for a fraction of a CDP licence. Buy a CDP when identity resolution and real-time activation are genuinely missing, not when the gap is only plumbing.
How does India’s DPDP Act affect CDP buying?
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, with implementing rules notified in late 2025 and phasing in over roughly the following 18 months, requires clear consent, purpose limitation and timely deletion of personal data. For CDP buyers that means three concrete questions for every vendor: can it record and store consent separately per purpose, how quickly can it execute a verified deletion request across all connected destinations, and where is the data physically stored? Ask for a live demonstration rather than a slide, and confirm current deadlines with your legal team.
