WebEngage Pricing & Review (India)
What WebEngage does, the rupee bands we have actually published, who it fits, where it falls short, and the three alternatives worth quoting against it.
Pricing in India
Contact-only: WebEngage prices on monthly active users (MAU) in annual slabs with feature tiers on top, bills in rupees, and publishes no rate card — WhatsApp, SMS and email volume are metered separately by the channel provider.

What WebEngage is
WebEngage is an engagement CDP — a customer data platform that bundles the data layer with the tools that send the message. Founded in Mumbai in 2011, it collects behavioural events from your app and website, stitches them into one profile per person, and runs push, in-app, web push, email, SMS, WhatsApp and on-site campaigns from a single visual journey builder.
It is billed in rupees, priced on monthly active users (MAU) in slabs, and is the most India-centric of the three home-grown engagement platforms. In our comparison of six CDPs it had the lowest entry point of the set.
Key features
- Visual journey builder that a non-technical marketer can operate without engineering help
- Behaviour-triggered messaging across push, in-app, web push, email, SMS, WhatsApp and on-site
- Identity resolution across app, web, email and phone into a single profile
- Segmentation on behavioural events for triggers such as cart abandonment and win-back
- WhatsApp Business Platform templates that can be fired inside automated journeys
- Rupee-denominated contracts and India-based sales and support
Who it fits
It fits mid-market Indian teams whose bottleneck is running campaigns, not plumbing data. In our stage-by-stage guidance, WebEngage’s entry tier is one of the two usual candidates for a five-person team under 50,000 MAU — alongside CleverTap’s self-serve tier — with the caveat that predictive AI features are not worth buying at that data volume.
The core fit is the 1–20 lakh MAU band: D2C, edtech and BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) brands with a lifecycle marketer who owns retention and no dedicated martech engineer. This is also where the three Indian platforms compete hardest and where discounts are genuinely available.
It fits less well if your team is engineering-led and already owns campaign tools. In that case a data CDP such as Segment or mParticle, or reverse ETL on top of a warehouse you already have, is the cheaper route.
Where it is weak
Analytics depth is the recurring complaint. Teams often pair WebEngage with a separate product analytics tool, which is a second licence and a second event taxonomy to maintain. CleverTap goes deeper on raw-event querying and long history retention; MoEngage puts analytics and campaigns in one interface.
It also thins out at very large, data-heavy setups. Above roughly 20 lakh MAU, evaluate it specifically on event history retention, query speed on large cohorts, uptime commitments and whether data can sit in an Indian region — a growing requirement under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023.
Pricing is opaque. WebEngage runs a talk-to-sales model with no published rate card, which is why our bands are wide and why we have not costed its entry or enterprise tiers at all. Treat the "Not published" rows above as exactly that: we have no figure we are willing to stand behind, not a hint that those tiers are cheap.
Finally, the licence is rarely the big number. Channel costs sit outside every quote: Meta bills roughly ₹0.78–0.88 per WhatsApp marketing message, SMS runs ₹0.12–0.25 and email ₹0.02–0.10 per send. At 2 lakh reachable users receiving one marketing template a month, that is about ₹1.6 lakh a month, over ₹19 lakh a year, in Meta fees alone — more than the low end of the licence. Budget six to ten weeks of engineering to instrument events properly before you count any of it as working.
Alternatives
- MoEngage — the safer default when you want product analytics and campaigns in one tool. Mid-market band ₹8–35 lakh a year. See CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage.
- CleverTap — deepest raw event data, usually picked for high-frequency apps in fintech, gaming and quick commerce. Mid-market band ₹10–40 lakh a year. Compared in Best Customer Data Platforms in India.
- Reverse ETL on your existing warehouse — if orders, support and product usage already sit in one place, this is often cheaper and more flexible than a second data layer. See Reverse ETL vs CDP.
Before comparing any two of these, read our WhatsApp playbook and add a year of message fees to each quote. On most Indian deals the ranking changes once you do.
Frequently asked questions
How much does WebEngage cost in India?
Our published mid-market band is roughly ₹6–25 lakh a year, based on pricing models and tier structures rather than leaked contracts. WebEngage does not publish a rate card, so every deal is negotiated on your MAU slab, feature tier and contract term. We have not published a figure for its entry tier or for enterprise contracts. Channel costs — WhatsApp, SMS, email volume — are billed on top of the licence in every case.
Is WebEngage cheaper than CleverTap and MoEngage?
At signup, usually yes: WebEngage typically has the lowest entry pricing of the three, which is why it is common among Indian D2C and mid-market teams. Our mid-market bands are ₹6–25 lakh for WebEngage, ₹8–35 lakh for MoEngage and ₹10–40 lakh for CleverTap. But cheapest at signup is not cheapest overall. Compare blended annual cost per reachable user, including Meta’s WhatsApp fees, not the licence line alone.
How does WebEngage charge — per user or per message?
Per user. You commit to an MAU band for a year, pick a tier that unlocks features, and pay overage if you cross the band. Message volume is separate: Meta bills WhatsApp templates directly, SMS is passed through to an Indian aggregator with DLT registration handled separately, and email is usually a bundled volume plus a per-thousand rate. Get the MAU definition written into the contract, along with a festive-season burst allowance.
What are the main limitations of WebEngage?
Three. Analytics depth is thinner than CleverTap’s or MoEngage’s, so teams often run a separate product analytics tool alongside it. It offers less depth for very large, data-heavy setups — above roughly 20 lakh MAU, test query speed on large cohorts and event history retention before signing. And pricing is contact-only, so you cannot sanity-check a quote against a list price. Budget six to ten weeks of engineering for implementation regardless of platform.
