MoEngage Pricing & Review (India)
What MoEngage does, our published India price band in rupees, who it suits at which MAU scale, where it falls short, and three alternatives worth quoting.
Pricing in India
MAU-based: you commit to a monthly-active-user slab for a year and pick a feature tier, with channel costs (WhatsApp, SMS, email) billed separately. No public rate card — quotes are sales-led, and startup programmes are available.

What MoEngage is
MoEngage is an engagement CDP (customer data platform) founded in Bengaluru in 2014: it collects app and website behaviour, stitches it into one profile per person, and sends push, in-app, web push, email, SMS, WhatsApp and on-site messages from one journey builder. Its distinguishing trait is that product analytics and campaign execution sit in the same interface, so a lifecycle marketer can find a drop-off and message the people who dropped off without a second licence. Pricing is metered on monthly active users (MAU) in slabs, with channel costs billed on top, and MoEngage does not publish a rate card.
Key features
- SDK-based event collection from mobile app and web
- Identity resolution into one profile per user
- Self-serve segment builder for marketers
- Built-in product analytics and cohort reporting
- Visual journey builder for behaviour-triggered campaigns
- Channels: push, in-app, web push, email, SMS, WhatsApp, on-site
- Predictive segments, advanced experimentation and extra data retention on higher tiers
- Rupee-denominated contracts and India-based sales and support
Who it fits
Under 50,000 MAU, small team. Usually not the first choice. At this size you want the cheapest entry tier that covers push, email and WhatsApp, and predictive AI features are not worth paying for because you do not yet have the data volume to train anything meaningful. Our comparison puts WebEngage’s entry pricing and CleverTap’s self-serve tier as the more common candidates here; MoEngage’s entry tier is mostly sales-assisted.
1–5 lakh MAU, growing fast. This is where MoEngage genuinely competes, and where discounts are real. It is the safest default for a large consumer app that wants analytics and campaigns in one place, and the more common pick for e-commerce and D2C teams that would otherwise buy a separate product analytics tool.
20 lakh MAU and above. MoEngage is commonly seen at this scale alongside CleverTap. Score it on event history retention, query speed on large cohorts, uptime commitments and whether data can be hosted in an Indian region — a growing requirement under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023.
By vertical, we see it most often in retail, D2C and BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) teams that want AI-assisted journeys. On cost, the only figure we have published for MoEngage is a mid-market band of roughly ₹8–35 lakh a year. We have not costed its entry tier or its enterprise contracts, and you should not read a number into that gap — the band above is a planning estimate built from published pricing models, not a quote.
Where it is weak
Features are gated upward. The most common complaint about MoEngage in our comparison is that advanced capability sits in higher tiers. Confirm in writing which tier includes predictive segments, experimentation and the data retention window you need, because that is where the quote moves.
No published prices. MoEngage runs a talk-to-sales model, as do five of the six CDPs we compared. You cannot sanity-check a quote against a list price, so you need a second vendor in the room to create one.
The MAU meter can work against you. Paying per unique user seen in a month punishes a large, lightly engaged base. If you upload a full CRM list of 8 lakh addresses while only 1.2 lakh people open the app, you may be paying several times the licence you needed. Get the MAU definition written into the contract, along with a festive burst allowance — a single Diwali or IPL campaign can double actives for one month.
The licence is not the bill. Channel costs sit outside it. Meta charges roughly ₹0.78–₹0.88 per WhatsApp marketing message in India; 2 lakh reachable users receiving one template a month is about ₹1.6 lakh a month, over ₹19 lakh a year, in Meta fees alone. At 1.5 million messages a month the channel bill can run seven times the software bill.
It is not a data CDP. If your bottleneck is piping clean data into many tools rather than running campaigns, Segment or mParticle fit better. And if your best audiences need business logic an engagement CDP’s interface cannot express — margin, refund rate, open support tickets, predicted lifetime value — that segment can only be built in a warehouse.
Switching later is real work. Expect six to ten weeks of engineering to instrument events properly, and expect deep historical event data not to transfer cleanly when you leave.
Alternatives
- CleverTap — deepest raw-event querying and long history retention, most often picked for high-frequency apps in gaming, fintech and quick commerce. Mid-market band ₹10–40 lakh a year. See CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage.
- WebEngage — the most India-centric of the three and typically the lowest entry price, with the journey designer non-technical marketers pick up fastest. Mid-market band ₹6–25 lakh a year. Same comparison: CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage.
- A warehouse plus reverse ETL — if your warehouse already holds orders, support tickets and product usage, this is usually cheaper and more flexible than MAU-priced software, but it gives you no in-session triggers without a separate event SDK. Frequently asked questions
How much does MoEngage cost in India?
We have published one band: roughly ₹8–35 lakh a year for a mid-market Indian engagement CDP contract, with startup programmes available. That is a planning estimate derived from published pricing models, not a quote or a leaked contract. MoEngage does not publish a rate card, so we have not costed its entry tier or enterprise deals. Pricing is set by your MAU slab and tier, and channel costs are billed separately.
How does MoEngage pricing work?
You commit to a monthly active user band for a year, choose a tier that unlocks features, and pay overage if you exceed the band. Slabs step up at levels such as 1 lakh, 5 lakh, 10 lakh and 50 lakh users, so sitting just above a boundary is expensive. Push and in-app are effectively included; WhatsApp, SMS and email volumes are metered on top, with Meta billing WhatsApp directly.
Is MoEngage or CleverTap better for e-commerce?
MoEngage is the more common choice for e-commerce and D2C teams that want product analytics and campaigns in one tool, avoiding a separate analytics licence. CleverTap tends to win where personalisation is high-frequency and data-heavy — large catalogues, many daily sessions, complex recommendation logic. Both are used successfully by major Indian retail brands, so decide on a paid pilot of one real use case rather than on a feature list.
Is MoEngage a CDP or a campaign tool?
Both, which is the point. MoEngage is an engagement CDP: it bundles the data layer — event collection, identity resolution, segmentation — with the tooling that actually sends push, in-app, email, SMS and WhatsApp messages. Data CDPs such as Segment and mParticle stop at collecting and forwarding data and assume you already own campaign tools. Buying a data CDP and then discovering you still need a campaign tool is a common budget overrun.
