CleverTap Pricing & Review (India)

CleverTap is an India-built engagement CDP for high-frequency apps. What it does, our published rupee bands, where it falls short, and what else to shortlist.

Pricing in India

MAU-based: you commit to a monthly active user band for a year (our guide cites example slabs at 1, 5, 10 and 50 lakh), pick a tier that unlocks features, and pay overage above the band. Channel usage — WhatsApp, SMS, email volume — is billed on top. CleverTap runs a talk-to-sales model and publishes no rate card, so every band below is a planning estimate.

Starter (self-serve)

Low hundreds of US dollars a month (no INR band published)

Assumes roughly under 50,000 MAUs. Self-serve entry tier; startup programmes are also available. We have not converted this to a rupee band.

  • Self-serve signup
  • Push and in-app messaging
  • Email and basic journeys
  • Rupee-billed contract available
  • Predictive segments
  • Advanced experimentation
  • Extra data retention
  • Dedicated support

Growth (mid-market)

₹10–40 lakh a year

Assumes a mid-market Indian brand roughly in the 1–20 lakh MAU range. Estimate from published pricing models, not a quote; discounts here are real.

  • Full channel set including WhatsApp
  • Journey builder
  • Raw-event segmentation and history
  • MAU band commitment, rupee-denominated
  • Meta's WhatsApp message fees (~₹0.78–0.88 per marketing message)
  • SMS pass-through and DLT registration
  • Email volume above the bundle
  • Six to ten weeks of implementation engineering

Enterprise

Not published

Assumes 20 lakh MAU and above. We have not published a figure for CleverTap deals at this scale — do not read a number into the gap.

  • Negotiated event-history retention
  • Uptime commitments
  • Query speed on large cohorts
  • Indian region hosting (ask, given DPDP)
  • Any published rate card
  • Channel spend
  • Implementation partner fees
  • Slab overage protection unless negotiated

Bands are our estimates for Indian buyers, not vendor list prices. Confirm with the vendor before budgeting.

What CleverTap is

CleverTap is an engagement CDP — a customer data platform (software that collects behavioural events, stitches them into one profile per person) bundled with the tools that actually send the message: push, in-app, web push, email, SMS and WhatsApp, run from one journey builder.

It was founded in Mumbai in 2013 and is now headquartered in the US with heavy engineering in India. It is built around its own event database, which is why it holds long user histories and lets you segment on very granular behaviour.

In our comparison of the Indian engagement platforms, CleverTap is the one most often picked by teams running heavy, high-frequency personalisation at scale — gaming, fintech, food delivery, streaming and quick commerce.

Key features

  • Event collection via mobile and web SDKs (software development kits), with identity resolution across app, web and offline records.
  • Raw-event querying and long history retention — the deepest of the three Indian platforms we compared.
  • Segmentation on granular behaviour rather than pre-built audience templates.
  • Journey builder for multi-step, behaviour-triggered campaigns.
  • Channels: push, in-app, web push, email, SMS and WhatsApp in one interface.
  • Real-time triggers, which is what buyers should score it on — that and push delivery rates.
  • Rupee-billed contracts and local sales support, with startup programmes available.

Who it fits

Under 50,000 MAU (monthly active users), small team. CleverTap’s self-serve tier is one of the two usual candidates at this size, alongside WebEngage’s entry pricing. Buy push, email and WhatsApp; skip the predictive features, because you do not yet have the data volume to train anything meaningful.

1–5 lakh MAU, growing fast. This is where CleverTap, MoEngage and WebEngage genuinely compete and where discounts are real. Run a paid pilot on two of them, and decide on how fast a marketer can build a three-step journey without engineering help.

20 lakh MAU and above. Depth wins here, and CleverTap is one of the two platforms most commonly seen at this scale. Ask about event history retention, query speed on large cohorts, uptime commitments, and whether data can be hosted in an Indian region — a growing requirement as India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023 obligations take effect.

By sector. High-frequency apps with many daily sessions, large catalogues and complex recommendation logic. If you are an e-commerce or D2C team that wants product analytics and campaigns in one tool without a separate analytics licence, MoEngage is the more common choice.

Where it is weak

Cost climbs fast at scale. That is the common complaint against CleverTap in our comparison, and it follows from the meter: you commit to an MAU band, and price steps up in slabs. Our guide cites example slabs at 1 lakh, 5 lakh, 10 lakh and 50 lakh users. Sitting just above a boundary is expensive.

The journey builder is powerful but has a steeper learning curve than WebEngage’s, which non-technical marketers tend to pick up faster.

No published rate card. CleverTap runs a talk-to-sales model. Of the six CDPs we compared, only Segment publishes real list prices. We have published a mid-market band for CleverTap and a rough shape for its self-serve entry, but we have not costed an enterprise-scale CleverTap deal — the tier above shows "Not published" for that reason, and you should not read a number into the gap.

The licence is not the bill. WhatsApp, SMS and sometimes email volume sit outside every quote. Meta charges roughly ₹0.78–0.88 per marketing message in India. Send one template a month to 2 lakh reachable users and that is about ₹1.6 lakh a month, over ₹19 lakh a year, in Meta fees alone — which for many mid-market Indian brands exceeds the platform licence.

Implementation is the real project. Expect six to ten weeks of engineering to instrument events properly. And switching later is harder than vendors imply: your SDK integration and event taxonomy have to be redone, and historical event data usually does not transfer cleanly.

Alternatives

  • MoEngage — the safest default for a large consumer app that wants product analytics and campaigns in one interface. Mid-market band ₹8–35 lakh a year. See CleverTap vs MoEngage vs WebEngage.
  • WebEngage — typically the lowest entry price of the three and the most approachable journey designer, though with less depth for very large, data-heavy setups. Mid-market band ₹6–25 lakh a year. Compared against the wider field in Best customer data platforms in India.
  • A composable stack — if your warehouse already holds orders, support tickets and product usage, reverse ETL plus an event SDK covers much of the same ground with your data staying in one governed store. See Reverse ETL vs CDP. We have not published a rupee band for reverse ETL tools.

Before you compare any two quotes, model a year of channel spend alongside the licence — our full breakdown is in how much a CDP implementation actually costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CleverTap cost in India?

Our published planning band for a mid-market Indian CleverTap contract is roughly ₹10–40 lakh a year, against ₹8–35 lakh for MoEngage and ₹6–25 lakh for WebEngage. Self-serve entry plans sit in the low hundreds of US dollars a month, and startup programmes exist. CleverTap does not publish a rate card, so these are estimates built from pricing models, not quotes. We have not published a figure for enterprise-scale deals.

What counts as a monthly active user?

That is the number that decides your bill, and it is the one buyers most often get wrong. Ask explicitly whether anonymous or logged-out visitors count, whether an email-only recipient who never opens the app counts, and whether a dormant profile counts. Uploading an 8 lakh-record CRM list when only 1.2 lakh people open your app can multiply the licence you needed. Get the definition written into the contract.

Is CleverTap or MoEngage better for e-commerce?

MoEngage is the more common choice for e-commerce and D2C teams that want product analytics and campaigns in one tool without a separate analytics licence. CleverTap tends to win where personalisation is high-frequency and data-heavy — large catalogues, many daily sessions, complex recommendation logic. Both are used successfully by major Indian retail brands, so run a paid pilot on one real use case rather than choosing on the demo.

Does the CleverTap licence include WhatsApp costs?

No. CleverTap provides the tooling to build WhatsApp templates and trigger them inside journeys; Meta bills separately for the messages, at roughly ₹0.78–0.88 per marketing template in India. SMS is almost always passed through to an Indian aggregator with DLT registration handled separately, and email is usually a bundled volume plus a per-thousand rate. Push and in-app are effectively included. Compare vendors on blended cost per reachable user.

What this means for you

  • Shortlist CleverTap if you run a high-frequency app and score it specifically on real-time triggers, push delivery and raw-event query depth.
  • Write the MAU definition and a festive burst allowance into the contract before you sign, not after.
  • Add a year of WhatsApp, SMS and email volume to every quote before ranking vendors — on most Indian deals the messaging bill dominates.
  • Budget six to ten weeks of engineering for event instrumentation, and ask for a rupee-denominated one-year term.
